A total of 89 members from Taiwan’s national team marched in the opening ceremony of the World University Games July 16 in Duisburg, Germany, according to the Ministry of Education.
The games are underway in the German region of Rhine-Ruhr through July 27 and have attracted over 150 delegations to compete in 18 sports, including wheelchair basketball, the first time that a paralympic sport has been included in the contests. Team Taiwan’s 196 athletes are contending for medals in 15 sports, the MOE added.
According to the ministry, Minister Cheng Ying-yao and Sports Administration Director-General Cheng Shih-chung attended a reception hosted by the Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire, known as the International University Sports Federation in English. They expressed gratitude to Leonz Eder, president of International University Sports Federation for coordinating the matches.
Minister Cheng said that the government has placed great emphasis on promoting sports, and added that the Ministry of Sports would be inaugurated in September to oversee the advancement of athletic affairs throughout the country, as well as on the international stage. (POC-E)
